Our Beginning: (Confused, Guilty, Lonely and Hopeless)

My brother was born with a mental disability that impairs his cognitive abilities. Basically his ability to reason, socially interact with others and planning skills are weak to non-existent. For a majority of my life I just tried to stay out of the way and not think about my brother’s situation. Years go by and my brother has become an adult.
Things have gotten worse. He lives at home with my mother who does everything for him. He does not interact well with anyone, has temper tantrums, no job, no plans, no future. My mom is getting old and is slowly losing the ability to take care of him. Without her care my brother has a good chance of becoming homeless.

Life Today: (Got a Plan & Hope)

Fast forward to now. We now have multiple sources of funding (ODSP & Passport) from the government. We have a retirement savings account RDSP (the government also contributes money). We have a job coach that comes in once a week to help my brother find, get and maintain a job. We a case worker that helps us to navigate the Canadian system. As well as being on a waiting list for behavioral therapist, psychiatrist, and government funded housing. We are still a long way from getting my brother to our goal of independent living, but I have gone from hopeless and doom to at least having a chance.

Why I started this blog is to become the person I wished I had growing up. Someone to give me a guide on where to start, what are common mistakes, how to plan/help a loved one with a disability. So if you are feeling tired, hopeless, confused and/or lonely on your journey to help create functional independent life for your loved one living with physical/mental disability come join Challenge The Challenge (CTC). Come join me as I document my successes and failures on my path to getting my brother and independent life.
