Helpful Website

Finding resources and communities can be a bit of a challenge for those of us who have disabilities or the caregivers of such people. I have been searching online and found a few websites that are pretty helpful. Below are just small snippets of what each website/blog is about and I highly recommend that you take some time to check them out in their entirety. There is also one aspect I would like to bring to light, and that is all of these links come from all over the world. We are not alone!

The Mighty

This is an american website where people with all types of disabilities post about their lives, struggles and successes. It is a great place to reach out to others going through similar situations as yourself. Honestly, hearing the real life stories of other people like us, just makes me feel happy that I am not alone. They also have this section call “check in with me” it’s a great way to get support regardless of what you are doing.

Disability Horizons

This is a UK based website. Many of the articles revolve around things in the news. It is really inspiring to see how groups come together to bring awareness regarding people who have disabilities. I really like visiting this website from time to time to see how accessibility is being addressed across the pond. I usually find that europe is usually a step or two ahead of north america in terms of human equality or environmental protection. Improvement that happen there eventually begin happening here.

The Sane

This is an Australian based website. It is internally funded by SANE Australia as part of its community education program. One of the parts that I found particularly helpful on here was their factsheets and guideline sections. It goes over a ton of different disabilities, treatments, diagnoses and other common questions people have on disabilities. It is a great place to start in understanding disabilities.

But You Don’t Look Sick

Another great american based website. A lot of the posts here are from the point of view of the person with a disability. The author has a really insightful way of explaining common issues people with disabilities face. There are a lot of awesome tips and tricks to be picked up here to make everyday life a little bit easier. Also the spoon theory is one of my favorite posts. Not to spoil it too much but in my opinion it does a really good job of explaining how disabilities impact a person in a way that abled bodied people can truly understand.
